A little while back I received these predictions from Faith Popcorn's Brain Reserve. I can't figure out if they are just so insightful and brilliant that they are beyond my normal human's capacity for belief, or if they are just as loopy as my instincts tell me they are. I know that it is probably the general concepts that are most important, but I can't help but thinking that by going as sci-fi as she does she doesn't lose some credibility with the average person. It's just hard to take predictions like this seriously:
- Trend: "Skin Deeper"
"Airports will discover that positive touches increase retail traffic and will hire actors to welcome you with a hug as you deplane."
"Mechanized 'hugging' booths will take the place of pay-phones in many cities." (not NYC, I bet!)
- Trend: "America's Next Top Surgery"
"Our (Brain Reserve's) Fantasy Adventure Trend incicates that people will become obsessed with the success or failure of risky but life-saving organ transplants, skin grafts and limb replacements. Reality television will chronicle participant's lives before and after, and magazines will speculate endlessly on who will be the next patient selected. The medical hopefuls will compete in American-Idol-like auditions to prove that they are the most deserving."
- Trend: "Family Pets"
"Soon animal lovers and their furry companions will grow even closer, biologically! As the cost of genetic modification plummets, engineering services will be able to create pets from scratch and pepper your future companion's DNA with your own. The result will be a unique representation of you: a pet that looks and acts like you. These animals will be such an accutate reflection of your temperamnet that therapists will begin seeing pets as proxies for their patients."
- Trend: "ExpertEASE"
"Look for removable cochlear-implants, rentable by the hour, that instantly lend you fluency in French or how to tune a car."
OK, just let me know when the next comet/space ship is coming.
